Milk candy is a type of candy widely popular candy in Asia. It is made by mixing milk, butter and sugar to a paste and reshape it to cute, little designs. It has a sort of creamy sweet milk flavor and it has a slightly hard texture but tends to soften up once you start eating them.

Milk candies is certainly considered by majority as a less unhealthy sweets because it contains milk and milk is good for kids. While that sentiment is correct, it does not mean milk candy is healthier than other candies. Here’s why.

1. It May Not Contain Even Contain Milk

While all milk candies do have that milky taste, it does not necessarily need to be made from real milk. Most milk candies are made from reconstituted milk or milk solids. Reconstituted or recombined milk is the liquid milk obtained by adding water to skim milk powder or whole milk powder; And milk solid are defined as the dried powder left after all the water is removed from liquid milk.

To a lay person, they may not be able to tell the difference but every Nutritionist or Food Scientist will tell you that these milk derivatives is very, very different. That is because milk is a very temperamental beverage, it is incredibly nutritious but the nutrients are also heat sensitive and is easily destroyed during the heating process. Hence often times the natural nutrients in reconstituted milk and milk solids is nowhere as good as the nutrients from pure milk.

Just because milk candy is made from milk derivatives doesn’t mean it does not contain other harmful substance that make candies unhealthy. Some milk candies also contain sucrose, a type of sugar commonly linked to hyperactivity and dental cavities. Trans fat is also a common fat that is found in candies that has butter or creamer, so to make an informed choice as a consumer, we recommend all mothers to always check the food label before giving it to your child.
