4 Steps That You Wish To Know Before Eczema Flare

Eczema is defined as a skin conditions where parts of the skin area becomes inflamed, red and itchy [1]. Hence unlike specific health conditions such as intolerance or egg allergy, eczema can be caused by various factors.

One of the most common cause of eczema is allergy. Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergy in children. Do make sure that you pick a suitable formula milk for your children.

Children tend to have dry patchy skin more often than adults as they have drier and more sensitive skin and their skin loses moisture 2 times faster than adults [2].  Hence, it is important to make sure that your child’s skin is well moisturized to prevent eczema flares later on.

Apply Moisturizing Ointment Or Cream

Your children may not enjoy the greasy feeling of having ointment on his skin but studies have found that skin ointments are more helpful in retaining moisture than lotion as cream and ointment have much thicker consistency.

However, parents must make sure to choose moisturizing cream that is strictly for your little one only as these creams are often dermatologist-tested to be suitable for your little one. This is very important as your little one also tend to have very sensitive skin and regular moisturizing ointment may contain harmful ingredients such as paraben that can further irritate their skin [2].

Warm Bath With Hypoallergenic Shampoo

Giving your children a daily bath is one of the most effective things you can do to manage eczema at home. A daily warm bath that lasts for 5 to 10 minutes with lukewarm water is ideal, and once you have dried your children, immediately apply moisturizing cream to prevent the moisture from escaping.

Aside from that, if you are aware that your child has sensitive skin, it is advised to use children shampoo that has the claims like ‘moisturizing’ ‘hypoallergenic’ and ‘organic’ as they tend to use natural ingredients that are more tolerable to your little one’s skin. The key factor here is to use a soap that has moisturizing effect as normal children shampoo sometimes may make the eczema flareups worse as it will make their skin drier than before [3].

Identify What Triggers The Eczema

The best way to prevent eczema is to identify what is the factor that makes the eczema worse and take preventative measure to avoid the exposure. If you notice that your child exhibits harsh skin rashes roughly around 1-2 hours after your child has consumed formula milk, it is an indication that he is not suitable for that formula milk.

If your little one is not allergic to any food, it is likely that his eczema trigger is from his surroundings. For children, environmental factors such as mold and pollen are rarely the cause [1], most eczema flare ups for children are caused by things that they touched such as:

As each children is different, we recommend parents to take a mental note on your child’s surrounding every time he shows signs of dry, patchy skin and try to find the reoccurring factor or pattern which may help you to identify his trigger.

Keep The Environment Cool

The ideal temperature in a children’s room is approximately 22 degree Celsius to 25 degree Celsius [4].  While it is not absolutely mandatory to adhere to that temperature range in your children’s room, we do recommend you to lower the temperature if you notice your little one’s skin seems drier than usual. Alternatively, you can dress your child in light, cotton clothes if the surrounding temperature is higher [4].

While the methods above are good preventative measures, they are merely home remedies that serves as preventative methods for mild eczema. If your child’s eczema is severe, it is still recommended that you consult your pediatrician on top of following these tips.
